Anime Digital Art Redhead With a With a Lollipop
Hair is one of my top five favorite things to draw and color, and this was too a very requested tutorial. I tried to add as much information as possible while keeping the video fun to lookout and total of tips!
Naught hither is a hard rule, and it's mostly to show how I do things, so I hope you enjoy it 🙂
Using references
It's tough to draw things when you don't cheque what they look like in real life. So every time you're stuck, search for photos! Not just of anime drawings, only bodily people besides.
Where, y'all enquire? In that location're plenty of places; you tin can proceed Pinterest, Instagram, DeviantArt, etc.! And if you think that's adulterous, copying, or stealing, information technology'southward not. Every great artist uses references, so y'all should likewise!
Shape and volume
Pilus and optics in anime are ofttimes used to express emotions and a character's personality, so they're usually given more details than in existent life. But this is drawing, so there aren't whatsoever complex rules for this! Let your manus flow, and practice your inventiveness. Take a look at your favorite anime drawings. How does the pilus make you feel?
Straight black hair feels serious;
while fluffy curls are warm and welcoming!
Sketching tips
I start hair just thinking of the general outline without giving much attention to details: when sketching, but the general shape matters.
If you don't know where the hair starts in the head, think of the skull, and add some padding. A unproblematic line in the eye should exist enough to represent that. Y'all tin brand the meridian part more complex every bit you acquire how pilus works.
Likewise, information technology's good to work with S curves. Fifty-fifty if the hair is straight, it can be a long open up S, making the hair expect light and flowy. With wavy hair, the S curves will be more than visible!
For perfectly curly hair, I employ a different technique. I beginning draw a spring and define the front part. Then, I indistinguishable that line shape.
Afterward that, I erase the lines that are on the back and connect them to form a full spring!
You don't need to draw every strand similar that (feel free to practise and so if you like though!), a few will be plenty to give the feeling you lot are looking for, and the back tin can only accept a unproblematic shape.
Don't be agape to delete what looks wrong and effort again. Even if information technology takes time, spending time on this part to get the feeling right will pay off in the end.
Some other important tip is to piece of work with long lines, not short chicken scratches. It volition make your drawing wait more polished, and you volition accept fewer chances to hurt your wrist!
Take breaks if you lot are lost, and look upwards new references to refresh your optics. Make sure to leave them open while y'all describe; it will assistance a lot.
Well-nigh lineart
Depending on the drawing, I will clean up the sketch instead of creating lineart.
By "clean upwardly", I mean I volition erase the messy lines and go over them when necessary, giving it a different feeling than a perfectly clean line. I feel this helps me relax almost fine art and not worry too much about details.
Y'all don't need to over-zoom and gum your face on the screen to be sure the lines are perfect! To exist quite honest, you are likely to be the only one that will exist able to spot your pocket-size mistakes.
The brush for lineart can be the same as for sketching, only this will depend on how y'all want it to look. I highly recommend looking at the standard brushes or checking Clip Studio Avails. There are many fun brushes y'all can easily download and use.
In this stage, yous can brand the lines thicker where they intersect or where shadows volition be. It will give your lines more depth.
Shading
Once you take the base colour added, define where your light source is. Call back your basic lessons about ball shading? Practice exactly that.
To do this, lay out a general shape with the shading color.
Once yous accept the general shape defined, you can smoothen it until your liking.
Only as y'all are even so learning, you don't demand to become fancy on the shading. Go slowly, inside the scope of what you feel is challenging enough for your current skills, then make it circuitous as you go!
As you can run across, there'south some kind of backlight on the blackness that matches the grey on the white side. I usually add some extra color to the pilus I draw, because it looks pretty!
Now, how to choice the correct color?
Short respond, in that location is no correct color! Play with them until yous find what yous similar: try pinkish in bluish, purple in green, orangish in yellow, and so on. Have fun! Wonder how to brand black and white pilus not await greyness, royal, etc.
If you lot use similar colors to your drawing's surroundings, the tone will look correct. For example, if her shirt were cherry, I would add more red tones to the pilus. I tend to use colors already on the drawing and playing effectually with them. Similar this hair strand in a blue and reddish room: there's a bit of each color on it.
Merely if you are working with complicated hair like a rainbow or slope, you lot tin prepare a new layer on top in Multiply blending mode, and exam out which colors work meliorate without messing upwards the gradient.
Highlights
This function is very fun, and there are many ways to add smoothen to the pilus.
Yes, even white hair!
I like to airbrush the pare color on the bangs, so when I add white highlights on top, it will show!
If you don't know which color to use, you lot tin can take the hair colour, create a new layer, prepare the blending style to Add (Glow), and then add blobs, triangles, lines, etc. Whatever shape works, so do what fits your taste, then use hue and saturation (Ctrl+U) to change the color to a tone that matches.
When I add highlights, that'south when I also add messy strands. We all struggle with messy hair, right?
Another little thing I enjoy is making the eyelashes and eyebrows transparent. You tin hands do that by locking the lineart layer, and and so coloring with a colour that's darker than the hair, or lighter. Try it out; it depends on the hair colour you lot are using, and if your lineart is fix equally multiply or not.
Conclusion
Maybe you're all the same unsure how to draw hair fifty-fifty after this tutorial, only I don't wait yous to suddenly be a pro. As I always say, art takes time.
So at the very least, take away this important signal from this: utilize references! I tin can't repeat this plenty but brand sure to use them mindfully.
I believe you don't actually need a step-by-step to learn something. Instead, endeavor to understand things in your own style. As long as you enjoy what y'all exercise and are up for the challenges life will bring, you will grow as an artist!
Practicing is primal, but patience and passion make upward the door.
Thank you very much for checking it out!
